Leonard Donald Atencio

Leonard Atencio, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, March 20, 2022 in Durango, CO after an extended battle with cancer.
Leonard's roots were firmly planted in La Plata County, he was born in Red Mesa, CO to Ramona and Miqueas Atencio. He attended school in Marvel, as a child he spoke only Spanish, learning English would be the first step of his educational journey. After graduation from Durango High, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After an Honorable Discharge he returned to Durango to attend Fort Lewis College. After obtaining a B.A. in business administration, he attended the University of New Mexico. Upon receiving his Education Specialist from UNM, Leonard decided to further his education by attending Kansas State University and prevailing with a Doctorate in Economics. His studies led to the opportunities of learning, as well as teaching, in some of the most prestigious universities in the country. He was also awarded a chance to teach in other countries such as Ecuador and Brazil, and of course he learned Portuguese in the process.
After his education journey, he returned to Durango, where he made his home and began teaching at Fort Lewis College. Teaching and spreading his vast knowledge were one of his great passions in life. He was frequented by many past students who thanked him and complimented him for the impact he made on their lives. During his 32 year career at FLC, he made many lifelong acquaintances (fellow faculty and students) who he held very dear to his heart.
Leonard was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was very strong in his Catholic faith. He was very involved in the community for many years. He served on various committees, boards, and commissions throughout Durango and La Plata County. He was instrumental in the development of our community and took pride in his civil services.
Leonard's roots always took him back to the "Dryside". Ranch work and farming were embedded deep in his life; these were also some of his favorite hobbies. From a young age, hard work and perseverance were taught, and it reflected in his life. He also loved to talk and share stories of growing up with his 9 siblings on the family homestead. He had a deep connection to the land and was very proud of where he came from.
He was preceded in death by parents, Ramona and Miqueas Atencio; sisters, Mary Black, Ruth Lynch and Frances Maag and brothers, Roberto and Fred Atencio.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 40 years, Roberta (Montoya) and together they had three loving children: Tonya (George) Mayberry, Joaquin and Mike. He is also survived by 3 grandsons: George (Morgan) Mayberry III, Isiah and Lawrence Mayberry, they were the light of his life. Leonard could often be found in the stands cheering at one of the boys' sporting events. Leonard was also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren: Mila, George IV and Ryatt Mayberry. His family was his true passion in life and he loved nothing more than to be in their presence. Leonard also is survived by sisters: Stella (John) Brinkman, Susan Eisenberger and LaVerne (Otis) Pulliam; brother Alfonso (Rose) Atencio; numerous godchildren, nieces, nephews and "primos".
Our family would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to all of his Doctors and Nurses who cared for him through the years. Especially the staff of the Med/Surg. Garden at Mercy Hospital.
Services for Leonard will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, March 26, 2022, Rosary at 10am, Mass at 11am, with interment to follow services at Greenmount Cemetery.
Leonard was an avid K-State, UNM, FLC, Colorado Rockies, and Denver Bronco fan. The family asks you to wear your favorite sports team attire to the services.
