Obituary for Nanna G. Alford

Durango resident Nanna G. Alford died of natural causes on March 1, 2013. She was 96. Nanna was born on September 24, 1916, in Bayfield, Colo., the only child to Paul and Alice Gum. She attended Drake University in Iowa, where she received a degree in English and drama. Her first job was as a sixth grade teacher in Bayfield, and she held numerous teaching positions throughout the years. She lived in Durango for several periods before she and her husband Seymour V. Alford retired to her parents’ previous home on West Third Avenue in 1978. Seymour preceded her in death in 1991. In 1998, Nanna moved to Sunshine Gardens West and has lived the past four years at Sunshine Gardens Country Home. During her years in Durango, Nanna participated throughout the community. She was an active member of Neo-Delphians, PEO Sisterhood Chapter BR, Four Corners Rose Society, and served as an election judge. She was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed travel. Her favorite destinations included Mykonos, Greece and Figi. Nanna is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Gay and Lou Kiene and her granddaughter and her husband Tara and Charlie Kiene, all of whom are current residents of Durango. A time of celebration and remembrance will be held at Nanna’s home at 1807 West 3rd Avenue on Saturday, March 9th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Nanna’s name to Hospice of Mercy.
