Vincent “Paul” Simon, Durango resident of 83 years, found peace on May 10, 2018. He was born at home on April 14, 1935 to Steve Simon and Marie Mercedes (Roracher) Simon. He graduated from Durango High School in 1952. After graduation, he owned and operated Basin Packing Company on Sawmill Road. For nearly 30 years, Basin Pack was a staple to restaurants and families throughout the area. His exceptional work ethic allowed him to ranch during daytime hours and process livestock through the night. Until his death, he managed ranch operations together with his sister, Dorothy (Simon) Eccher at the family ranch, Simon Land and Cattle Company located on the Florida Mesa. Many commented that Paul could do the work of 3 men. Despite the long working hours, weekends were often reserved for all night card games of Pitch. He was known for his incredible generosity and friendly but sharp and biting wit. Those close to him said he was a true friend who always had time to share a drink or two, do a little gambling or simply visit. He was a lover of animals, sports of every kind, and classic country music. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Eccher, his daughter, Stephanie Tulk, granddaughter, Caressa Goodman, great grandchildren Liam and Kellyn Goodman, niece, Marietta Linney, nephews, Steve and Rudy Eccher and numerous extended family members. He will be laid to rest May 25, 2018 at Greenmount Cemetery. Services will begin at Hood Mortuary at 10am.
