July 25, 1923 — September 1, 2017

Robert L. Cox, 94, died September 1, 2017, at Pine Ridge Extended Care Center in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, after a long and productive life. He was born July 25, 1923, in Meeker, Colorado, to Charles L. Cox and Winnie M. (Wheeler) Cox as the oldest of three children. The family moved to Allison, Colorado, in 1938, and Bob spent the rest of his life in the Allison-Arboles-Tiffany-Ignacio area. He graduated from Ignacio High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942. He fought in the World War II battles of Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima as an amphibious tank gunner.

After the war he returned to “God’s country” to become a rancher/farmer. He married Doris A. Scofield in 1946 in Aztec, New Mexico, and together the couple had ten children (seven boys and three girls). Doris died in 1968 at the age of 42. Bob later married Virginia Sanchez; they were married for 36 years until her death in 2007.

In addition to his wives Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gene, his daughter Winnie, and his son Charles. He is survived by his sister Betty Seibel of Arboles, CO; children Robert Cox, Jr. of Santa Rosa, CA; Barbara Durland (Tom) of Ignacio, CO; Pat Evans (Roy) of Albuquerque, NM; Gary Cox (Dawn) of Bloomfield, NM; and Stanley Cox (Stella), Randy Cox (Barbara), Jay Cox (Thelma), and Steve Cox, all of Ignacio, CO. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Bob enjoyed reading; doing word puzzles; watching football, wrestling, boxing, and bull riding on TV; and visiting with family and friends.

Cremation has occurred and interment will be at Crestview Cemetery in Durango.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Allison Grange Hall on Saturday, September 23, from 2:00-4:00 p.m.; refreshments will be served.
