Phyllis Reddy

January 27, 1927 — August 18, 2017

Jean C. Reddy was called home the evening of August 18, 2017, passing peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. Jean, who was 90, had yearned to reunite with her beloved husband Melvin, who passed in December 2002.

She arrived in the world January 17, 1927 as Phyllis Jean, born to Cliff and Opal Crane in Dodge City, Kansas. She enjoyed a happy childhood and went on to attend Colorado Women’s College in Denver. She and Melvin had grown up just blocks from each other, but their love didn’t blossom until an extended winter break when they began courting. At the beginning of March 1947, they exchanged vows that held strong over the next 55 years. Their shared adventures led them to live in Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba — where they witnessed the revolution firsthand — and Mexico.

Jean’s unshakable spirit, good will and genuinely caring kindness, which endeared her to everyone she met, was due largely to her abiding faith in God. That faith, combined with great strength and a spirit of adventure, guided her in raising five children with strong midwestern values, and comforted her at the loss of her oldest son, Randy, in January 1970. The family moved to Cortez in 1970 and, once the nest had emptied, to the Rafter J subdivision outside of Durango in 1985.

An avid reader, Jean had many interests included gardening (with a passion for roses inherited from her mother and father), sewing, family and a strong drive to help others through volunteer service wherever she lived. She was also a friend of animals of all kinds, with pets that included an alligator, snakes, rabbits, cats and dogs, which were her favorites.

One could not ask for a kinder, wiser friend and mother than Jean.

Jean is survived by her sister-in-law Virginia Kennett, sons Mark (Diane) and Dave, daughters Cindy Chavez and Lisa Reddy as well as grandchildren Badi, Dante Chavez, Inshallah Perlman (Aaron), Camille Marshall (Aaron), Hakim, Ma’ani Maggard (Doug) and Marissa Chavez, and great-grandchildren Tajid Person, Mikkel Person, Anissa Person, Layli Mitchell, Akira Mitchell, Anjelica Maggard, Julian McAteer, Ashton, Cadence, Reese Romans, Calvin Marshall, Langston and Eli Marshall. She is also survived by her loyal shelter dog, Rosie.

A memorial service will be held at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 E. 3rd Avenue on Saturday, August 26 at 10 a.m. followed by a reception. Jean was cremated and her remains will be interred at the family plot in Dodge City at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to Navajo Ministries, PO Box 1230, Farmington, NM, 87499, (888) 325-0255, navajoministries.org.
