Obituary for Dorothy Hinsley (Friddle)

Dorothy Hinsley passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017, surrounded by family. She was 88 years old.

Dorothy was born June 3, 1928, to Herbert Guy Friddle and Myrtle Brown in Borger, TX. She met Jimmie Lee Hinsley in Lubbock, TX, while working at a walk-in theater where she sold tickets. They married on September 14, 1946. The couple then moved to Durango, Colorado in 1953, where they built, owned, and operated the 1st drive-in restaurant in Durango called, ”The Malt Shoppe.” Dorothy worked at J.C. Penny’s while they were building”The Malt Shoppe.” She then quit Penny’s and worked side by side with her husband. It was a very popular drive-in and teenagers loved to hang out there. “The Malt Shoppe” was located where JP Tire now stands. They sold “The Malt Shoppe” in 1973, and started a new business, Main Supply Janitorial. Dorothy kept the books for the business, which they owned for 8 years. When they sold it, the new owners asked her to stay on as a bookkeeper, which she did for 2 more years. She and her husband then moved to T or C, New Mexico. They lived there until Jim passed in 1998. Wanting to be close to her family, she moved back first to Aztec and then finally to Durango.

Dorothy was a very devoted Christian and active in the First Southern Baptist Church. She was a very talented seamstress, making all of her children’s clothes while they grew up. After the kids were older, she learned how to ride a motorcycle and went on trips with her husband. She had many interests; snowmobiling, golfing, skiing, and boating. She took a mechanic, computer, and typing class at Fort Lewis College. She was always eager to learn new things about computers, even when they first came out and never lost her excitement for anything new in the world. She belonged to the garden club and became a master gardener.

She was a very health conscious person all her life. She will always be remembered by her family as such a lady and a great example of a southern bell.

She is survived by; her children, Sandy Zink of Durango, Lynn Hackler (Larry) of Durango; Grandchildren, Brian and Shana Zink, Tim and Kimberly Zink and Kristi Zink of Durango, Sarah and Brian Smith of Austin, TX and Cory Hackler of Jose, CA; 9 Grandchildren and 2 Great-Grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Lee Hinsley and her brother, Herbert Friddle.
