Stella Quintana

September 20, 1916 — June 8, 2016

Stella M. Quintana, 99, a resident of Arboles has gone to be with her Heavenly Father on June 8, 2016. She was born September 20, 1916 in Clayton, NM to Celso and Elvira Mascarenas.

On October 31, 1934 she married Juan F. Quintana. Together they settled and lived in Rosa, NM. Of this union, they had four children: Elvira, Pete, Baldamar and Martha Mae.

Stella attended and graduated from Aztec High School in 1934. She attended Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM and then went on to graduate from Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. Stella taught school in Homer Mesa (Miller Mesa), San Juan County, Rosa, Chama and Dulce, all of NM. She touched many lives as an educator for 32 years. She retired from teaching in 1975. She loved to teach and missed it so much, she began to substituting for Ignacio School District for a number of years. Stella had a very loving way about her and was of a very generous spirit. She was very giving of herself, strong for her family and a person of deep spiritual faith. She loved to crochet, embroider, paint ceramics and gamble.

Stella was proceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Juan; daughters: Elvira and Martha Mae; her son, Baldamar; her grandson, Carlos Esquibel and her sisters: Betty Gallegos and Leora Valdez.

Stella is survived by: son, Pete (Grace) of Arboles; daughter-in-law, Claudine Quintana, of Arboles; 8 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; brother, Steve (Donna) Mascarenas, of Farmington, NM; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Stella is still a member of St. Peter/St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles. She was also a member of the Carmelita Society of Arboles for many years. Contributions can be made in Stella’s name to either the Carmelita Society of Arboles C/O of Katie Martinez, Treasurer, PO BOX 1625, Arboles, CO 81121.

A rosary will be recited by Deacon Tucker at 11:00AM at the St. Peter/St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles on Monday, June 13, 2016, with Mass of Christian Burial at noon also on Monday, June 13, 2016, as Father Damian De la Cruz Nunez as the celebrant. Stella will be laid to rest at the Rosa Cemetery.
