Obituary for Erma Fern Neill (Neill)

Erma Fern Neill passed away April 12 at her apartment in Durango from complications of gall bladder duct cancer.
She was born July 11, 1933 to Erma Graham Neill and Edward Glenn Neill at West Point, Illinois and had one brother, Edward Gale Neill. The family moved to Longmont, Colorado in 1946. After graduation from high school, Fern attended Presbyterian Nursing School in Denver and became an RN in 1954. She enjoyed recalling that while working as a waitress at Bear Lake Lodge at Rocky Mountain National Park to earn her nursing school tuition, she received a $100 tip from a physician who supported her desire for a nursing career. Fern certainly paid it forward, having held her Colorado nursing license until her retirement in March of 2015- a career of nursing service spanning 61 years! Fern enjoyed traveling the USA, Europe, and China with her husband Charlie and celebrated last year with a safari to Kenya and Tanzania. Fern enjoyed alpine skiing and swimming into her 80th year and loved playing bridge and golf weekly.
Fern married Peter Schranck in 1955, and raised three children in Lakewood, CO. She married Charles R. Neill, Jr. in 1982 and relocated to Grand Junction, CO. She was preceded in death by her husbands, brother, and oldest daughter, Karen Schranck. She is survived by her sons David and Paul (wife Virginia) Schranck of Durango, CO and grandsons Colton Schranck of Scottsdale, AZ and Taylor Schranck of Durango.
A memorial service will be held at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Grand Junction on May 29, 2015 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, JDRF 26 Broadway, 14th Floor New York, NY 10004.
