Obituary for Benita Fern Olguin

Benita Fern Olguin, 85, died Saturday, May 17, 2014 at home and surrounded by family in Ignacio, Colorado. The recitation of the Rosary will be Thursday, May 22, 7:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church the Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 23, 2014 at 10:00 A.M., also at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Father Damien De La Cruz Nunez will be officiating. Burial will follow at Tiffany Cemetery in Tiffany.
Mrs. Olguin was born March 21, 1929, in Ignacio, Colorado, the daughter of Raymundo and Adelina Trujillo and she grew up in Ignacio. She helped the family on the ranch and excelled at skills involved in making the homestead lucrative. Benita was married on December 31, 1951, in Ignacio, Colo., to Agapito Olguin. She raised her family on the farm near Ignacio.
Benita completed her GED while working as a Head Start Aid in Ignacio. She was a lifelong learner and believed in bettering herself.
She was an avid and gifted gardener. Benita made her own cheese, butter and cream. To say she was an excellent cook is an understatement as she prepared large meals to feed her entire family. Her red chili is famous among her family and friends. Benita would be called resourceful and hard working in caring for her family and community.
Mrs. Olguin was an active member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children: Viola Dominguez (fiancé: Alvin) of Durango, Raymond Olguin (Spouse: Linda) of Bloomfield, N.M., Paul Olguin (Spouse: Sue) of Farmington, N.M., Pete Olguin of Cortez, Colo., Robert Olguin of Ignacio, Chris Olguin (Spouse: Natasha) of Ignacio, and Carmella Olguin (Spouse: Harold) of Durango, sister, Josefita Herrera of Durango, Sister, Mary Martinez, of Oxford, Colo., Sister, Mary V. Chavez, of Farmington, N.M., numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Agapito in 1979, her parents, siblings: George Trujillo, Elizah Gallegos, Ray Trujillo, Gregorio Trujillo and Merced Rodriguez.
